Digimon Uncensored. Nov 18, 2 min read. See More by KrazyboutKomics. February Feb 9, Why, hello, old friends! I'm still alive and doing well! I'm still an artist and my dreams and styles haven't changed much--just improved. I'm not really here anymore because I get caught up in a lot at a time and I just can't keep up with everything. I fansub and translate for scanlations of unlicensed manga now, so there's that, but more-so than any of that, I have a part-time job that keeps me busy and I've been to Japan Fall and am hoping to go there again, but this time, for over a year for a real job!
Lots of stuff to consider. Lots of research to do. Lots of Japanese. Lots of art. I don't have much of a reason for co. Jul 4, Dec 7, Offers on everyone Always Open. Not looking to resell my Migs and Dainties tho! Don't judge by the title. Even non-Digimon fans might like this. I find it both educational to compare the cultural standards at the time and hilarious beyond the normal definition of "hilarious," due to the comments that litter the end of every line. They sure don't let the slightest things go, which is partially why I found it amusing. Especially since I, myself, have seen the show simaltaneously in Japanese and English with a comprehensive understanding of both languages as well.
Not everything they say is culturally accurate and honestly, it's been a while since I read anything on that site , but they do make some interesting points about the kinds of things done to the show to cultivate the themes to a new audience. Overall, I find the Japanese version more fit to my own interests, but I don't have a dislike for the English version, likely due to nostalgia.
If I was as attached to the importance of keeping things serious as it originally was, I'd be furious at the English editing and dubbing, too. They sometimes compain about lines that were essentially the same, only worded differently. If there is no difference, that's one thing, but I still see it happening in direct translations today and it still bothers me.
To be honest, Digimon's English dub is great in that it stuck heavily to the plot of the original It makes it more appropriate and iconic to the market for kids, but I would hardly consider it a positive change from the original myself.
But that might just be my preference. I hardly ever find a show for kids that isn't funny nowadays and it bothers me. It's like whoever is making this stuff doesn't think kids will like watching and experiencing the serious lessons of life without some kind of funny dialog added in between. But to each their own, I suppose. There's just no way to properly translate Japanese into English and maintain both the feelings that are being conveyed as there are some words that are just plain untranslatable , and the timing.
So yeah Sometimes, I find it beneficial to treat the dubbed version of something as its own separate entity. It just drives me less insane I should mention that I have barely watched any anime except for Shinryaku! Ika Musume in nearly two years. You too, de gesoo ka?! I always prefer to watch the Japanese if it's the original because it's exactly what the original product was meant to be.
The English dubs usually have issues keeping to the subject matter, and as someone who understands Japanese, I can even point out quite a few specifics as to why this is so. For better or for worse, I still prefer to watch the original Of course, as much as I loved Digimon's English version and the jokes I heard from it as a kid I value some things more than others now.
I've been watching the Japanese Digimon dub no subs and I realized just how much deeper the Japanese version was compared to the English version, in terms of character development, setting, and emotion. Sometimes, I just wish I had been exposed to these deep things in the first place.
It's like they avoided some of the meaningful stuff because they didn't think kids could understand it And separate from any dub involvement, the Japanese also got more material to work with, so if you do any deep research, you'll find out that each separate dimension is connected. One hidden character from the first two seasons actually crossed dimensions and became a main character of the third season He has his own games to prove it.
Now I'm ranting my amazement of the franchise. That site is run by ignorant weeaboos who know nothing about Japanese. Then again, judging from your comment "de gesoo ka? Not sure what to think of your criticism.
They organize each line by giving a direct translation with no regard to English grammar so people can read the near-equivalent Japanese through English , then a fixed translation with better English grammar a good English equivalent that is easier to understand , and finally the English dub's version the thing they are comparing. That's impossible, at least, without a good grasp of the Japanese language. I'd argue they aren't as ignorant as you think. As for my "de gesoo ka" comment, I was only putting that there to jokingly indicate I knew what he was talking about, since I also watch the show in which the title character replaces "desu" in her sentences with "de gesoo"--her being a squid and all.
I assure you that I don't speak or type like that normally. Though I honestly have nothing against "weeaboos," so long as they can take what they do and love and make something better out of it when they get older and less "ignorant.
Can't fix that, and there are better things to do than take what they do so seriously and hold yourself up over it. Well, right now, I'm actually going over all the translation-fails Macho Duck made in just episode 1 alone.
I'm up to 39 and a half. He doesn't know Japanese. He takes the subtitles from the Japanese version, then changes them slightly often making the dialogue an incorrect translation in the process to make it look like he translated it himself.
That's very ignorant and arrogant, and it's quite hilarious to people who have a decent grasp on the Japanese language. Based on your "de gesoo ka" comment, I really don't care.
If you want to speak Japanese, go ahead. I'll understand you. To me, mixing Japanese and English makes you sound like a twat who loves Japanese but is too lazy to learn it properly. It had nothing to do with her eyes; it was the fact that she was looking at him with defiance and anger.
Shows how well I was listening back then! The dub is actually exactly correct here with regard to the original dialogue. That's pretty embarassing. XD;;;;;;;;; Sorry about that, folks! I suck! No no no no no! I think it's a pun, but I don't know for sure and I don't have my tapes anymore to check the original pronunciation, so I left 'aijou' in hiragana.
Now, the nuts weren't in his pocket or anything, and even if they had been, why on Earth would Mimi be digging in them? The answer is because it was one of the few sentences he understood completely, so he wanted to make sure to quote it, but he did so in a way that indicated it was just one of any Japanese sentence he could quote.
He could've just said: "Mimi asks Jou if she should give him her 'aijou,' which can translate to either 'love' or 'nuts. If the people at Digimon Uncensored had just said: "We don't know Japanese, and we get our translations from the subtitled versions," I'd have no problems.

The time difference in this episode, not counting Intro, Outro and eyecatch, is 26 seconds. The censored US version and the uncensored Japanese version were used for this comparison. The fact that anime are being censored isn't a secret. Even the completely suitable for children series "Digimon Adventure" wasn't save from being edited. The editors for the US version did a lot of changes. For example Joe became a softy-crybaby, who react allergic to everything and suffers from Asthma.
Almost the whole score was changed, including the really nice Intro being replaced by a rap-song. Also at some points the US version fades to black and repeats the last part from the scene before even on the DVD.
At some points there is dialogue, where isn't any in the Japanese version. You can notice this especially in the first episode, where all the characters are introduced. While Tai talks like a waterfall in the English version, he is silent in the Japanese version.
As usual the eyecatch was removed from every episode. The eyecatch is a small animation that serves for parting the episode, when there would come a break for the ads. The removal of the eyecatch isn't listed in the censorship report. Japanese title: "Angemon awake! The US version switches directly to the point where Ogremon is landing from his jump.
