The author acknowledges in the start of the book that his inspiration comes in part from the self-help self-discovery genre, and from authors such as Castaneda. This outlines a very useful mindset to use while climbing and in life. His ideas will actually be roac useful.

The book had techniques in climbing just not the kind I was thinking of. Maybe the image of a person pops into your head, or a random memory of something that happened last week.
See, most of psra doesn’t sounds all that exciting boiled down into simple statements like that. Their attention becomes focused on why they agree or disagree with some early remark.
Ultimately I came around to the book, and think it will be very useful in helping me learn more about myself, learn more and grow more personally from my climbing, and almost incidentally will probably result in me climbing harder grades as well.
Jun 18, Peter House rated it it was amazing. I only gave it four stars because I thought it was too short. A friend recommended this book to help with the mental aspect of rock climbing. Also, there was quite a bit of pseudo-science Chopra and Don Juan that I cannot overlook. Trust your preparation, your training, your intuition–stop thinking about it. That excuse looks pretty flimsy when held up in this light. This is probably the first book devoted solely to the subject and I do not doubt its importance or influence. Jul 17, Fallon Rowe rated it it rocaa amazing. This is what you climb for. It delves into the depths of the ideal mindset—not oara for the activity of climbing but—for the individual who climbs. It is embarrassing how well Ilgner called out each and every one of my mental habits for returning to my comfort zone; some I had no idea existed until he poignantly threw it in my face.

It’s true that he writes about the psychology of climbing without really knowing psychology, but his ideas are spo At first, I was skeptical of whether I’d like this book. The personal philosophy suggested by this book ties together several concepts and tools that I have encountered other places, unified in an approach to life.
Also, there are a list of exercises at the back to use to improve your mindset. And I must say, there are many times that my internal excuse for not applying these bits of wisdom that I already know boils down to–“sure that’s all well and good, but THIS is just too hard to apply that to”.

It is a very specific type of self-improvement, the risk taking kind – which of course is something very closely related to the climbing activity. I recommend it to any climber or athlete struggling to break out of a plateau. Pushing yourself constantly is an intimately personal affair and climbing lets you confront this.
