But don't quote me. Introduce yourself. I live between Brooklyn and Vermont. I am an interdisciplinary artist, art worker, teacher, city dweller, and nomad. I am from the woods and I also grew up in the plains. I was raised by an engineer and a quilter to make all kinds of things. Tell us about your work.
My work emerges in a variety of formats, including painting, silkscreen, video, music and text. Lately, I aim to make paintings that engender loops of apprehension, mis-registration, and refusal of their signifying gestures, of the signs or near-signs that they contain. I am less interested in arriving at one meaning in my work, than in getting close enough to the possibility of many meanings without closing them down. This question is hard to answer because the answer isn't no, but I am not interested in claiming a coherent subjectivity.
Queer artists are my favorite people, and I am so proud and inspired by this community's deep engagement with art and difference. Edie Fake. Where do you live? How does sexuality play into your work? In my drawings I use ecstatic architecture and vivid geometry to draw spaces for queer and specifically trans identities and histories. Each piece evolves from free associations between bodies and architecture, from the physicality of rectal doorways and bloody pools to psychological gestures like vibrating pattern and winding, maze-like walls.
I'm always trying to go out on a limb in envisioning what Queer Space can look like, so the finished drawings become these Winchester Mansion-style building-riddles about identity and sexuality.
I don't think there's any singularity to what it means. A lot of work has been done for trans and queer civil rights and safety, and a whole lot of work still needs to be done in a multitude of directions: the decriminalisation of trans bodies, environmental justice, racial justice, healthcare and housing access — the struggles all continue.
What will you be working on during the residency? I will be working on an epic project called "Yearbook". For this project I paint one 12 x 9 inch painting every day for an entire year. I give myself only one hour to complete each painting. The self-imposed time restriction enables me to focus on the most important elements to convey in each painting and be present in that given moment. Mistakes, failures, successes and indecisions all share the same space… I've made a habit of texting a picture of each finished "yearbook" painting to my husband every morning.
And it's become somewhat of an extended love letter to him. Besides exhibiting all paintings in its entirety it's a leap year , I plan to publish this project as a book. But my work doesn't always overtly look or reflect this. I have an ongoing series of diptych paintings called "We Belong Together" that approaches abstraction from a queer perspective. Shown in pairs, these intimately-scaled paintings are reflections that are equally about sameness as they are about difference.
They're also very much about the act of looking and shifting perceptions. And also about being in tune with someone you love. I affectionately refer to them as my "same-sex" paintings. My work — photography, performance, social practice, sculpture and installation — focuses on the problem of being an object of other peoples expectation, while at the same time, struggling to locate a sense of self-hood beyond those expectations. I draw from personal history, and examine the "locations" of homoerotic activity and their relation to the mainstream ideals of masculinity circulating in American visual culture.
I find that the energy on display in locations loaded with sexual openness and exploration make for promising but sometimes challenging investigations.
Smithsonian Under Fire For Gay Portraiture Exhibit : NPR
After winning over critics and a legion of fans with self-produced debut album About U, which featured queer anthem and their biggest hit to date I Know A Place, the Los Angeles-based band were hand-picked by Harry Styles to support him on his debut world tour, and have been on an upwards trajectory ever since. So when it came to recording their sophomore release, often a make-or-break moment for signed artists, the pressure was well and truly on.
As the band prepares to release their second collection into the world, we joined them on a four-way conference call to discuss how queerness helped bring them together, tackling the looming clutches of imposter syndrome, and whether or not Josette is a capitalist. For a sophomore album, Saves The World feels like quite a big statement to make.
You gain clarity on what needs to shift in the community. What do you say to that notion? Josette: The world is literally and metaphorically on fire right now, so anyone who says that is a delusional person.
Your lead single Number One Fan has a message about self-love and self-care, and that still feels like a very new concept. Why was it so important for you to get on board with that movement?
Naomi: I think within the song itself there is that trepidation about self-love, and how a lot of it is about not actually truly believing it but trying to believe it. Or am I making this all up in my head? Did that play a part in bringing you all together? Josette: I think one thousand per cent. We went to a college where it was very cis, straight and white — not conservative, but conservative-adjacent — so it was pretty easy to know when we met that there was something similar between all of us.
It feels very familial at this point. Katie: Maybe! But my feeling has always been that the three of us have a very deep bond. I do think the three of us being queer women helped with our workflow, because there was no discounting the talent of a member of the group because of their identity or gender presentation. Everyone was heard. Naomi: For sure. Do you think queer women are still discouraged from being sexual or talking about sex? I think queer femininity is generally fetishised, but then also if you get too real about it then it does maybe freak people out a little bit.
But yeah, I think there is a weird dynamic with queer sexuality in pop culture right now. Have you watched that yet? I feel in two minds about it. And at the same time, I also feel that singing about queer desire still comes with a real threat of physical violence. These extremists are heavily armed and prone to mass violence, so going on tour and singing about queer desire and the empowerment of women is honestly a scary thing to do right now. But what are you going to do? Stop singing? Fuck that.
But even that song felt meaningful to me when it came out. It took some balls to put that song out at that time, because no one was talking about that shit back then. Even though it totally qualified within the context of a heterosexual relationship, and was maybe slightly voyeuristic in that way, it still felt important to me at the time. Do you ever sit back and think about the fact that you are providing that authentic representation you never had when you were younger?
Because I imagine that could be quite a big responsibility. Naomi: We think about that a lot, and it was a big part of the conversation when we were deciding whether or not we wanted to be out. Josette: I think as a band we have done really, really well. I think for some reason when we were coming up, the world was becoming more ready for that kind of messaging. It might not always seem like it, but the negativity is a response to that progression, and we are going to continue moving forward.
The concept that queerness is and can be — and has been — easily co-opted by some hegemony to sell stuff, especially during Pride.
That comes into play as well. You were subjected to capitalism. You yourself are not a capitalist. I have one final question. Is there a specific song on the new album that means a lot to you? I just enjoy it so much. This record was a very difficult process, but sometimes you just have a ripe peach ready for the picking, and I think that was one of the songs that was just laid out before us and we took it. Naomi: This is a hard question. Josette: Thank you.
