It has become a common practice in many parts of the world for men to stand and urinate. First of all, we must remember that our ability to digest food and drink is a great blessing from Allah. We would not be able to survive without a digestive system. However, with every blessing comes a responsibility.
Since human waste is classified as impure, Islam teaches us a few rules about how to relieve ourselves with dignity. There are many Islamic guidelines about how to use the restroom. We will only focus on those that pertain to standing and urinating. This common practice has led to the following unethical practices:. One bad habit that has resulted from using of public urinals is the loss of personal modesty in the restroom.
It is very common to see two men using the bathroom while having a conversation at the same time. This is abhorrent. When he needed to relieve himself, he went far away from me. Increase in impurity. Probably none. This results in people leaving the restroom without an appropriate level of cleanliness or washing their hands. That will suffice. Disrespect for others.
One of the common habits we find in people who regularly use urinals is that they also stand up while using a lavatory. This can result in an unsanitary seat covered with urine and germs. Very few people care to clean the seat, let alone the toilet area after leaving, so, the next person entering has to deal with that disgusting mess.
Public pathways and shaded areas are two areas where people would be offended from excrement and filth because they use them so often. The same curse would apply to those who leave filth behind for the next person. The curse, in this context, has two meanings: people are cursed by the one who has to deal with the dirt they left behind and they are cursed by Allah for their careless and disgusting habits.
He always used to sit down. Her challenge still stands today. Muslims should try to combat this immorality in their own community by encouraging good standards of hygiene. We live in societies which claim to be clean and advanced, yet their toilets — the most basic of sanitary developments — are among the filthiest in the world. Visit any gas station, high school, theme park, etc. Purity has an environmental impact and is strongly connected to worship; without a clean body, a Muslim cannot pray.
It is up to us to be aware of this guidance, learn it and apply it. Mustafa Umar was born and raised in Southern California.
Whenever I go to any muslim country besides maybe UAE,their public bathrooms are the worst and make me thank God that I live in America.
The bathrooms can get bad in America but it is nothing compared to muslim countries or other countries. Maybe America is bad in that respect compared to europe though but not the filthiest in the world. However, I have to say this was an excellent article, jazak Allah khair. Still, all human beings need to learn and apply what the author wrote in his very nice article. I even copied for myself to remember everyday. Perhaps the brother in the article was trying to say we have all this sanitation in the west yet when we get to the restrooms it all goes missing.
But yes, at the same time that is no excuse, Muslims should know better, especially those of us living the west. I have seen standing urinals in many mosques in Cairo including Azhar mosque. I was very surprised to see the urinals. When I asked someone I was given the reason that some people may have difficulty sittig hence the need for urinals.
Even if this point is true surely the urinals should be like any other toilets with individual doors to protect privacy but rather it was in open space. This completely conradicts the ethos of being clean and shameful protecting your own privacy. This habit derived from the near universal acceptance of modern, indoor plumbing.
Does Islam allow the modification of local customs or is it heresy to wipe yourselves with anything else but three stones?!!! So what is with my facination with people going to the toilet. Do they hop on one foot until everyone leave or do they Adopt to the moment?
There are standing urinals in the Meena of Saudi Arabia where these are meant for Hajj pilgrims. Nowadays, I would assume that public lavatories are just as dirty as garbage dumps, especially since they dont have janitors to regularly clean. I was wondering if you would you still advise to sit down in such cases.
Unless one has legit cleaning utensils, I would assume the impurities would still be there. Jazakallah hu khair. Thanks a lot for sharing this article.
Cleanliness is very important. May allah bless you and reward you for this helpful deed and guide us all to follow…. I believe for cleaning the private parts, one is supposed to use their left hand. I will try to look for a hadith about this though.
Go back and reread the quote: it says the prophet S said NOT to use the right hand for cleaning. Therefore it clearly implies one must use the other hand — the left hand. My only concern with not sitting down, other than what is described above, is the fact that when standing and using a urinal, urine will always splash onto my clothing.
How could I pray with impure clothing. Because of that, I always sit to urinate and I always bring a wet paper towel with me to wipe myself afterwards. Just to let you know I have heard advice not to wipe with wet paper. If water flows over the area i. However if that does not occur, then using wet paper can simply spread the filth around.
I find using two or three wet — not just damp but soaking wet — paper towels is much cleaner than using a dry paper towel. In middle east and other countries, I dread going to a public bathroom, once I paid for a hotel room just so I could use a clean bathroom.
I am pretty strict about not standing, and teach same to my kids, but public school bathrooms are filthy so are many outsie public bathrooms, it would be wrong to sit and use them!
JazakAllah khair for the excellent article. It is a requirement in the current situation where we muslims mingle with non-muslims for us to show that Islam is a faith which talks about cleanliness to the highest levels. I have a major issue with regard to using the toilet. Mostly in the area where we live in the mosques have squat toilets, so in that case since we always where pants I find it extremely difficult to use these toilets wearing Pants. As we cannot squat with pants on and use this and removing the pants cannot be done as most of these squat toilets are viewable to the public.
In this situation can we urinate while standing and try with utmost care to avoid the impurities striking our clothes? My husband and I were discussing this some topic time ago. The article discusses standing and urinating in public.
What is the permissibility of standing and urinating overall? For example, is it permissible for a man to stand in an enclosed bathroom? JazakAllahu Khairun. In the article above — the author mentions that there is only one hadith recorded that the prophet saw urinated whilst standing during his travels — this is not entirely accurate as there are other hadith to support the prophet saw urinated whilst standing.
Allah swt knows best. Salaams to the ummah. I really liked the article, excellent reminder. I have to say that I do do some of what you guys say in the comments. For example, when I use a public restroom, if it is dirty with, super filthy, I stand.
If I can clean it then I sit. By the way, most of the public restrooms never are clean. As far as work, thankfully the restrooms are kept clean. Ja zakallah for the wonderfully reminder. Isnt this pretty simple? Just stay clean. If you can sit, sit. If its too dirty, dont sit.
Wash yourself. Dont hold chat sessions in bathrooms. Why belittle it — it is about cleanliness and purity externally, which reflects the internal state.
Very few people care to clean the seat, let alone the toilet area after leaving, so, the next person entering has to deal with that disgusting mess. Enjoy your OCD ;-. As for just urinating in the non-Muslim toilet cubicle, I would use a piece or two pieces of clean wet tissue paper and two pieces of clean dry tissue paper to wipe them real clean. What does Islam say about this behavior? First of all, we must remember that our ability to digest food and drink is a great blessing from Allah. Since human waste is classified as impure, Islam teaches us a few rules about how to relieve ourselves with dignity. There are many Islamic guidelines about how to use the restroom. This common practice has led to the following unethical practices:. One bad habit that has resulted from using of public urinals is the loss of personal modesty in the restroom. It is very common to see two men using the bathroom while having a conversation at the same time. This is abhorrent. The Prophet peace be upon him said:. When he needed to relieve himself, he went far away from me. Probably none. This results in people leaving the restroom without an appropriate level of cleanliness or washing their hands.
That will suffice. He peace be upon him told us not to…use our right hand when cleaning and to not use less than three stones to clean ourselves after we finish. This is what the Prophet used to do regularly. One of the common habits we find in people who regularly use urinals is that they also stand up while using a lavatory. This can result in an unsanitary seat covered with urine and germs. Very few people care to clean the seat, let alone the toilet area after leaving, so, the next person entering has to deal with that disgusting mess.
In this regard, the Prophet said:.
The Prophet peace be upon him always sat down to relieve himself. Urinating standing up, why would you take the chance of urine slashing back onto your skin or clothes? Sometimes the stream doesnt go in the direction you intended.
Wouldnt you want whats best for yourself, regardless? Yeah kind of. Still, I find it really hilarious how I just wrote some bullshit examples about farting and sleeping on the side, and you guys tell me there actually may be legit islamic rules about it.
Cracks me up :D. I dont understand, whats so funny about it? Whats so funny about living a clean, healthy lifestyle? Having rules for everything even the most basic things, it's over the top.
To go back to the peeing example, that particularly made me react because it's freaking peeing. Everyone pees, everyone knows how to do it, it's a basic thing humans do. It's not rocket science, when you got to pee, you just pee. Coming up with a "correct way" to do it is laughable. Also, I pee standing all the time and NO I don't splash myself with rivers of urine. So there's the usefulness of this rule If you consider every action you perform each day, not just peeing, and strive to perform in the most efficient, clean, and healthy manner, then I dont believe anything is considered "over the top".
Its just the way you choose to respect yourself and your body. I guess some people, not necessarily muslims, may respect their hygiene more than others. You have to remember that your doing it for YOU. Thats really the issue here. Its not rocket science, but it is science! Its recommended that you urinate sitting down, but if you cant sit for example when toilet seat not clean Not necessarily, but if I get urine on myself it nullifies my ghusl meaning I'll have to take a full bath, and also wash my clothes.
I haven't heard this one before, how does it nullify ghusl? Isn't it good enough to clean the area affected with water? No it does not nullify ghusl, you should wass your clothing. Ghusl is nullified by coming in contact with 'wet' najasa e. It is an obligation to remove najasa from onself which is for example evident in that the Prophet SAW was once praying with the Sahabah and he took his sandals off midprayer because Gibrael came and told him he had najasa on it.
Here even though it wasn't on his skin so no ghusl needed , he was still obligated to remove it. Here is where some of the hadith come in about "peeing while standing" because you do not want najasa on you. What if you sit down and someone else had peed all over the toilet seat and their wee-wee makes you unclean?
Honestly this sounds ridiculous. Do you pee with full force towards the middle of the toilet? Maybe try peeing on the side unless you want to assert dominance or with less force.
I've pissed my entire life standing up and never had a problem with it splashing back on me. And I quite doubt you never had a problem with splash. See, look at it this way: If I turn the tap on at a reasonable pressure, water will stream out going right down. However, despite that there will be some that splashes to the right and left which is where the problem comes of not trying to get urine on your body or clothes.
What might work I guess is perhaps hold a piece of tissue paper right beneath exit of the urethra. You will find urine there, even if little amounts. I do not know why you are being downvoted. I saw Allah's Messenger coming or the Prophet came to the dumps of some people and urinated there while standing. Actually both are authentic.
The incident of the first was that the Messenger suffered an injury in his knee such that bending over to relieve himself was not possible.
I'm on my phone so ill pull it up when I get home but I believe the explanation is in Fath al Bari. But these are speculative explanations to resolve contradictions. They are not given in the hadith. And Allaah knows best. This is speculation. Many things are possible. But we can only talk about things for which we have actual information.
Speculating why and then declaring something reported that the rasool did as makrooh is not honest brokering. My biggest complaint regarding our scholarship is that the try to bend the facts by giving speculative excuses to allow them to fit their opinions. Actions have leeway while words not so much. If a direct command is given to the Ummah, then accept that because there is no potential for any misunderstanding.
However, identifying an action that has other causalities doesn't negate anything, it just means you or I do not have the knowledge to understand the context of the situation unless it's given to us. Words have a lot of leeway. Words don't seem to mean anything concrete in this kind of scholarship it seems. We can mold them into whatever we wish. You misunderstood, I'm speaking generally.
If a hadith is authentic, then yes, that's "actual information". Any act of sin is an act of "kufr", but that doesn't mean every sin makes you a kafir. So I can clean my guy with water, which in my IMO, is a cleaner method than just using a tissue.

We usually ignore it simply because we excrete it. Since it is an excrement, it is something not supposed to be in our body so, why bother about it? But the truth is that urine has a lot of surprising facts. In ancient China standing was the way preferred to take a leak by both genders. Yes, even women used to stand and pee. The pee would then flow away from their bodies. Women standing and peeing was not just limited to the Chinese. Some years ago, women in Europe used to do the same.
Back then, those women used to wear long dresses without any underpants. Muslims — men and women — in Muslim countries will squat or sit to urinate because according to them its dogs that stand and urinate. You think urine is useless? That phrase came from ancient Romans, whose spies used urine to write right between the lines of their official documents.
The hidden messages revealed themselves when the documents were heated. As of today, men stand and women squat to pee. It was the other way round in ancient Ireland and ancient Egypt. Pioneers in America came up with a unique way to treat earaches. Piss — the term used for urine originated before 14th century. The term is called onomatopoetic term. Give a tablespoon to mice and ask them to fill it by urinating.
That horse pees north of 4. You think a Clydesdale pees too much? Think again! Ask an elephant and it will reply in kind by giving 13 gallons or more of pee in a day. Well, in case of female elephants , it is difficult to get a measure because they will usually pee and poop at the same time unlike the male elephants. Whales have really big bladders. For instance Fin Whale can nicely tuck in 5. Heard of Mojave Desert? There are tortoises in that desert. Those creatures are known for storing amount of urine that weigh up to a third of their whole body weight.
In desert conditions water may become scant. When that happens, these tortoises use up the water in urine by filtering and sending it back into their body while leaving behind the waste material that they later excrete. It is a very wrong notion that camels store water in their humps. Actually they store fat in that location. What they do to deal with water crisis is that they prevent most of the water in their body from converting into pee. Because camels allow very little water to get converted into pee, their urine is very salty.
Just how salty? Tasted sea water? Here is another interesting camel pee facts — when the camels urinate, they will simply let the liquid flow down their legs. Ever wondered how cave rats manage to find their path in deep and dark caves? They just make sure that they urinate along the way and make a trail. They then sniff their way back through the darkness. Billy goat has a unique way of attracting a mate. It will just urinate all over its beard, chest and belly. Now, the mate will be attracted to the smell!
Porcupines are even weirder. A male porcupine will simply start urinating in every possible direction to find a mate. You see — the magical smell attracts a mate and as soon as the males finds his match, he will go and piss all over her!
Did you ever think that urine may have some relationship with UV rays? Think now! Degu — a small South American rodent will pee on its passageways. Degu urine has this extraordinary ability to reflect UV rays that the Degu can actually see and find its way!
