They call themselves Jharnia , or, protectors of streams. In August the Dongria Kondh have overwhelmingly rejected plans by notorious British mining giant Vedanta Resources for an open-pit bauxite mine in their sacred Niyamgiri Hills, in an unprecedented triumph for tribal rights.

The Dongria Kondh women are as defiant as ever. We will not give our forests to anybody , said one. All of the women are prepared to go to jail for this. And even if you threaten to kill us, we will carry on living here peacefully. The programme of missionary activity up until the mid 20th century heavily emphasized changing the gender roles to make them conform to the European pattern. Until recently, women in Europe were generally seen as inferior to men, denied opportunities to succeed in society, and their role was to complement and support their husbands.

Yet Innu women of the same era were far freer within and outside marriage, and often chose where and when to camp on their long journeys across the sub-arctic expanses of their homeland, Nitassinan. This independence scandalized the Jesuit missionaries, who tried repeatedly to impose European standards by making Innu women subservient to their husbands, but it only succeeded after the Canadian government coerced the Innu to abandon their migratory way of life and live in village settlements , says Professor Colin Samson, who has worked with the Innu people for decades.

Nonetheless, Innu women in recent years have been leaders in the resistance to low-level flight training over their lands, which scares away animals used for food, and has a negative impact on physical and mental health.

They have also been prominent in opposing extractive industries on Innu lands, and have been active in efforts Innu people are making to maintain their way of life. For many years she has led a spring-time walk through the local Mealy Mountains, with the aim of reconnecting the younger Innu generation with the lands they have lived on for nearly 8, years.

If nobody teaches our children, what will they think when they grow up? It is important to know who you are. I am Innu. The country is my life. No nurse, no doctor. My father helped my mother give birth. The Innu place. The Hadza have probably lived in the Yaeda Chini area for millennia. The Hadza value equality highly, recognizing no official leaders.

As a result, Hadza women have a great amount of autonomy and participate equally in decision making with men. The Arhuaco have lived here for centuries. Many Arhuaco leaders were killed. Despite the continuing dangers, Leonor has dedicated her life to speaking out against abuses against Colombian Indians.

The Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta … is the heart of the world she says. Here is where our spirits rest and remain. It took 10 days before we received news that my husband never reached his destination. Angel and the other men had been kidnapped, tortured and killed. When they found my husband, his fingers were missing and he had no hair left.

I have now lost all prospects of a life with my partner and family. And I think indigenous people will continue to be targeted without any justice. This is how it is now.

We have to learn to live quietly, and in constant fear. But we are Arhuaco. So they should treat us like Arhuaco. Her homeland is a remote, wind-blasted place of permafrost, serpentine rivers and dwarf shrubs; the reindeer-herding Nenets people have migrated across it for over a thousand years. During the winter, the women endure temperatures that plummet to C.

In the summer months, when the midnight sun turns night into day, the women pack up camp and migrate north with their families. Today, their ways of life are severely affected by oil drilling and climate change. Their migration routes are now affected by the infrastructure associated with resource extraction; roads are difficult for the reindeer to cross and they report that pollution threatens the quality of the pastures. The reindeer is our home, our food, our warmth and our transportation , said a Nenets woman.

Since Bangladesh became independent from Pakistan in , the indigenous Jumma people of the Chittagong Hill Tracts in the mountainous south-east region have endured some of the worst human rights violations in Asia.

Gentle, compassionate and religiously tolerant, the Jumma differ ethnically and linguistically from the Bengali majority. Today, they are also one of the most persecuted tribal peoples.

They are almost outnumbered by settlers and brutalized by the military. In one single act of genocide, hundreds of men, women and children were burned alive in their bamboo homes. Sexual brutality against Jumma women and young girls is also alarmingly high: since August , at least 12 Jumma women and girls have been subjected to sexual violence, although the number may well be higher; rape often goes unreported due to its social stigma.

Little has been done to prosecute the perpetrators of these crimes , said Sophie Grig of Survival International. This leaves Jumma women and girls increasingly vulnerable, as their attackers act with impunity.

In the middle of the endless yellow fields of soya and cattle ranches, there is a tiny patch of rainforest. This is all that now remains of what was once thick, lush Amazonian rainforest. It is also the last refuge of the Akuntsu, once a thriving Amazonian tribe.

Most of their people were massacred by gunmen hired by invading ranchers. Today, only 5 Akuntsu are still living; three of them are women. In a few decades from now, an entire people with their own view on the world will have gone , said Fiona Watson of Survival International, who has visited the Akuntsu. Humanity will be the poorer as yet another piece of our rich diversity disappears forever.

The Bushmen are the original people of southern Africa. Between and almost all Bushmen were taken from their homes in the CKGR and driven to eviction camps outside the reserve, where they were not only deprived of their ways of life, but humiliated by endemic racist attitudes.

How can you have a stone age creature continue to live in the age of computers? Some Bushman women and their families have now returned to the reserve, but harassment and intimidation continue.

In January , reports emerged that some of their children had been arrested for possessing antelope meat. Let them call us primitive. Let them call us Stone Age people. Our way of life suits us. Here, Bushmen are dependent on government hand-outs, hunting is banned and depression, alcoholism and HIV are rife. I was still a young person when I became a healer. I dreamed and the dancing and healing started.

When I started to dance I could feel a person by their blood and smell. I was able to heal well at Molapo because there were a lot of ancestors there who I can talk with. The ancestors speak through my blood. But there are not as many ancestors in New Xade, so my powers of healing are weaker.

The ancestors of Boa Senior and other tribes of the Andaman Islands, such as the Jarawa, are thought to have been part of the first successful human migrations out of Africa. Boa Senior died in Nearly 55, years of thoughts and ideas — the collective history of an entire people — died with her.

What can I do? Boa Senior asked before she died. The Jarawa face a similar fate to Boa Senior unless a trunk road that cuts through their forest land is closed permanently to settlers, poachers, loggers and tourists. Before the Indian Supreme Court passed an interim order in January banning tourists from using the Andaman Trunk Road, hundreds of tourists traveled along the road every day in the hope of seeing the isolated Jarawa tribe.

Since , Survival has been campaigning to ensure that the road is closed and the policy of minimum intervention adhered to. Soni Sori is an adivasi tribal school teacher and mother of three young children from Chhattisgarh state in India.

Soni has been an outspoken critic of the Indian government, Maoists and of steel companies such as Essar Group. She was raped and tortured while in police custody, having been accused of being a courier between Maoists and Essar Group.

Soni has now been imprisoned for 17 months, with little hope of bail — accused of a crime for which there is little evidence. Giving me electric shocks, stripping me naked, shoving stones inside me — is this going to solve the Naxal Maoist problem?

Jo Woodman of Survival International, said, Soni Sori has suffered horrific abuse at the hands of the police and remains in their custody. But what is this really about? Meanwhile, the suffering of the Adivasis of central India continues, and justice seems a distant dream.

I want to go back and help my people , said Soni Sori. I want to use my education to empower them. The future of Little Butterfly is, at best, precarious, unless her lands are protected and her rights respected. A skeletal man in his eighties wandered around the ship wearing only a fluorescent thong, his loose skin draped around his bones in cascades that looked like freckled frosting, and a gigantic, barrel-chested man — he looked like he'd eaten an actual barrel — lumbered around the lido deck on an industrial-strength cane, wearing only a loincloth. Nude tribal children. The Beauty Behind the Controversy

This work reaches across the boundaries of time and context, revealing a maternal understanding of the vulnerability of children, and by extension, the exposed raw nature of being a mother. Its ironic that Mann describes the naked child as the purest human form before it is sexualized by society, and then society comes along and sexualizes her work. I loved this article. My inquiries often lead to this question of what is the human? What are our natural characteristics, and how can we understand our nature when we live in a society that conforms us into civilized, proper beings.

For anyone who loves or hates! If you love her, this will give you incredible insight into her life and how it shaped her work be prepared for some roller coasters and unexpected events! Great use of secondary sources. I loved this topic. I think every child has gone through that phase where clothes become an evil entrapment. It is strange how sharp the contrast is as well; some see it as normal and beautiful, while others see it as a source of pornography, perversion, and abuse.

I for one think this relates to how we raise children today, keeping them in an overly sheltered environment. Excellent, thought-provoking article that explores both sides of the controversial issue. Sally Mann is one of the most important photographers of the 21st century. Her work not only explores the depths of the human psyche, but is executed with meticulous skill and a true understanding of her craft.

It has always puzzled me how one can mistake artistic expression for pornography. In the former, the naked body is presented as an authentic and natural behavior, closely integrated with the immediate context of the narrative. In the latter, it is presented as a focus for seduction, an invitation for contact.

Those who see seduction in the naturally authentic, impose their own layers of personal expression over those things which are innately innocent. This may elevate some, but diminish other aspects of her art.

They are decidedly not all mere documents recording natural moments of childhood from a neutral vantage point. Biology sexualizes all of us; society suppresses or magnifies the reams of codes and pressures passed through history and cultures, affecting our beliefs and some, but not all of our responses to our sexual proclivities.

The commerce of her art enters the domain of exploitation of minors, and whether the kids were willing participants, and were guaranteed later compensation for their involvement.

Entirely separate from assessing the artistic merits, but critical in assessing the artist-as-parent. This article is greatly informative. I knew nothing about Sally Mann until now and I want to know more. Especially in the United States, nudity is often looked down upon.

Lovely photos and a great article. I teach photography and a course on the History of Photography. I found this article to be well researched and incredibly engaging. Your discussion about specifically the nude in regards to children is not frequently written about and changes the discussion about her work that is usually focused on debating the definition of pornography. Thank you for a fantastic article. Very engaging and insightful article.

Thank you for this article. Thank you for this thoughful and intelligent article. Great article! On the one hand, her critics have opened up an interesting debate, and it is great that people are more aware of issues of childhood abuse and exploitation. On the other hand, one must view the work in context- just because a child is naked, it does not mean that they are sexual.

Yes beautiful photography. And true art. However, I am disturbed that children of this are not in any way capable of giving their permission to be photographed nude or for their nude images to be sold and published worldwide. These children were put at risk. The pursuit of art versus the reality of humankind. I think it is interesting to see the change in views towards child nudity as artistic expression.

Context in these artworks is so important. Good article with an interesting critical lens. I do enjoy art that pushes the limits, however, children are always going to be the most controversial topic, particularly in photography. I believe this is rightfully and justifiably so. By playing to the idea that it is society that imposes certain taboos on the human form, I do find this to be contradictory as it does just that through the exploitation of her children.

This is very different to naked photos in family albums. This was made for an international audience. I feel this is indeed coming back to artists wanting to push the limits for the sake of it. For me pieces like this just enforce societal ideas of sexuality and in fact play to the wider capitalist and neoliberal paradigm. The artist is looking to advance her work, standing and notoriety at any cost, not taking the agency of her children into account.

We live in a world full of really sick people, so putting something like this out there is going to cause controversy. The artist knew this and played to it for her own benefit.

In my opinion. For the children themselves I think this also has the potential to affect them negatively. Imagine your school peers finding a series of naked photographs of you? An extremely interesting article, Nicole. I do agree however, that her intent is not always seen by adults, and that their interpretation is what may cause controversy.

This was an interesting article, but it felt very short. Otherwise, it inspired me to read more about the artist. Thank you! Nicole, I love how you write with such strong conviction.

I gravitate towards artists who completely cut open themselves and create something that is undeniably them. A lot of the criticism towards these photographs originate from the way people were raised, especially how they were taught about bodies. I was raised to look at my body as a representation of anatomy and not sexualize it.

Therefore, when I see her children naked, I see a child living without judgment and insecurity. It was a great pleasure to learn about Sally Mann for the first time through your article, Nicole. I have a couple of reactions, which are entirely unrelated to to one another.

Interesting that it was not deemed necessary to black-out her nipples and genitals. Thank you, Ms. I am currently writing a manuscript on different attitudes toward child nudity. Your comments on any-child subjects caused me to do some thinking. I just finished writing a whole page on the subject. In return, I would like to share a recent insight of mine. I think I can explain that: It so happens that men tend to associate nudity with sex more than do women.

That seems to go for hetero-, homo-, and pedosexual men and women, and in all six permutations. I started to wonder what women use for masturbatory stimuli. I found three Websites in which women were asked that same question. The respondents said that they wanked over videos, movies, and literature. There was no mention of nude photographs. This gender difference wrought havoc in the editorial office of Playgirl Magazine, which attracted both male homosexuals and women heterosexuals.

When the editors tried to comply with one group, the other group complained. I also wondered about the rare but existent women who were attracted to children the wrong way.
