Why should teens try out crafting? No matter what craft you choose, you'll be starting a fun hobby you can enjoy throughout your life. You can even create your own style with handcrafted clothing and accessories. If you're interested in protecting the environment, many crafts involve recycling as you turn everything from place mats to jeans into exciting new projects.

Finally, you can make memorable gifts for friends and family members. But why do teens need their own crafting books? Knitting is knitting no matter what age you are. However, books intended for an adult audience can be difficult to follow; some are designed for people that have been crafting for decades, and others don't appeal to teen sensibilities. Instead of knitted tea cozies, you'll more likely find projects like making your own macrame bracelets , or do-it-yourself henna tattoos.

From detailed photographs for visual learners to projects designed around the latest teen fashions , teen craft books give young crafters just what they need.

The authors do an admirably thorough job of outlining prep work and setup; plus, they describe "quick-fire versions" and adaptations to make the projects suitable for other age groups. The book has many black-and-white photos and step-by-step instructions; even better would have been color pictures and easily reproducible pages to make those directions into handouts. Although the price tag may be hard to swallow for the thriftiest among us, which often lines up with those also considered the "craftiest," the hand-holding may prove invaluable to the DIY-shy and librarians new to the overwhelming realm of teen crafts.

The black and white photographs didn't make any of the crafts very appealing to me.

I might come back to this book if I was looking of a teen craft, but would most likely look on pinterest because I like full color photos so I can see what the project is supposed to look like. Apr 10, Brianna Sowinski rated it it was ok. Already seems lame and dated. Probably did at publish date too. Jul 28, Sarah added it Shelves: crafts , librarianed , nonfiction. An admirable attempt by librarians to promote DIY ethic via teen craft projects, however there is not a lot of new ground covered in this book.

First of all, for this price it should have been twice as long. There are only 12 projects in here and some of them are unoriginal instructions for magnets with glass marbles can be found anywhere or just inferior to other DIY books the instructions for the coasters are not as good as the instructions for the same project in Big Ass Book of Crafts.

I An admirable attempt by librarians to promote DIY ethic via teen craft projects, however there is not a lot of new ground covered in this book. It almost seems geared towards librarians who don't craft. As is, it just pats itself on the back for recycling, which is not very hip. While it was worth the look through for my library, I'm not going to be buying it.

Mar 16, Rachel rated it really liked it Shelves: nonfiction , young-adult , programming. I had never really thought about doing crafts with teens, other than classes that teach how to crochet. This book had some really cool ideas in it.

I liked that they gave you ideas on how much the items used would cost, as well as the difficulty, time, supervision, group size and mess factor for each craft. There were a lot of projects involving decoupage, which I fortunately like to do, so no problems there. I think I will try the first one, creative marbles, for my programming class project as I had never really thought about doing crafts with teens, other than classes that teach how to crochet. I think I will try the first one, creative marbles, for my programming class project as it is one of the easiest!

Also it has some interesting uses, such as storytelling tokens to make up a story with words and pictures , for a poetry slam or simply as gifts. I loved the ideas of teens making blank books to use as book journals, photo album, sketchbook or for writing their own poetry. I would also love to make the vinyl totebag! Mar 06, Auggie rated it liked it.

There are some pretty interesting craft ideas and the instructions are pretty straight forward. However, the colorless black and white photos depicting the projects and some of the steps are difficult to see and offer very little visual assistance in deciphering necessary processes. I'm a bit of a visual learner and appreciated the pictures but overall they were dull and difficult to make out in some cases.

The lack of color most certainly bothered me. There are a few of the craft projects tha There are some pretty interesting craft ideas and the instructions are pretty straight forward. There are a few of the craft projects that seem good for tweens, but might not translate to kids on the higher end of the age spectrum.

I'm looking forward to putting some of the crafts in this book to use! May 01, Ann Santori rated it liked it Shelves: read The one idea that I definitely hadn't thought of before is having your patrons or your volunteers create crafts that are saleable for library fundraising. A 'book pillow' or a blank hand-made journal would be attractive items. May 24, Megengelter rated it really liked it Shelves: nf-reference. Dec 31, Melissa Wehunt rated it liked it. Nothing really new in this book that you haven't seen online.

But it is a nice grouping of projects The instructions are nice, there are links to templates I wish the pics had been in color though. Oct 05, Angelina Justice rated it really liked it Shelves: non-fiction. This is a great little book. There are a lot of great ideas. The only downside is that many of the activities take a long time to do or are much better suited to very small groups.

One neat feature was that some of the projects have one or two page instructions available online. The web address is listed. That makes having extra onsite and take home instructions easy. Mar 04, Robin rated it really liked it Shelves: list , craft-books. What I liked about this is that the authors made it easy for librarians or teachers to use with a group because they have made it clear what your set-up should be in terms of the number of tables you need and whether you should put newspaper down on the floor, that type of thing.

Some of the crafts they feature I've done and some I haven't but I am glad this is part of my library's collection! Mar 18, Shayna Ross rated it liked it Shelves: crafts , non-fiction. The projects themselves were also a little more boring than what I would usually do, but I do think it's a good starter craft book. Jun 14, Julie rated it liked it Shelves: Some interesting projects, but nothing a quick Pinterest search couldn't duplicate. I expected more book-related projects and was disappointed.

It's not going to be the classroom creative go-to I'd hoped. PS Wouldn't a melted crayon bookmark get on the pages of the books??? Dec 19, Alison rated it really liked it Shelves: skimmed , adult , non-fiction-libraries. This is a super useful book with great ideas and convenient pdf copies of the projects though the link has moved. Feb 14, Angie rated it it was ok Shelves: , crafts.

Good ideas, but nothing too jaw-dropping. The instructions are well done and they do tell you the estimated time it takes to do the project. Would've liked to have color photographs on the final products, but I understand publishing costs.

Apr 03, Lee rated it did not like it. Apr 01, Danielle rated it liked it Shelves: nonfiction. Some of the crafts are doable, the rest, not so much. May 24, Jessica Oban rated it did not like it Shelves: crafting , non-fiction. The book doesn't feature a lot of crafts, and what it does feature, are crafts that have been done before.

Nothing really new or exciting.
